Simple Fair isle Hat

Size-
Women's medium ( 20 inches around)

Materials-
Heavy worsted weight yarn;
In this photo;
Color A- olive green
Color B- purple
Color C- rust
Color D- dark red
16 inch circular needle size 9
Double point needles size 9
(or size needed to get the gauge)
Please don't hesitate to change the needle size
to get the gauge.

Gauge-
In circular stockinet stitch, 16 stitches equal 4 inches.

Abbreviations-
k- knit
p-purl
dbl dec- double decrease as follows-
Slip one, k 2 together, pass the slipped stitch
over the 2 knitted together.
rep- repeat the directions between the *.

Using the 16 inch circular needle and color A, cast on 80 stitches. Place a marker, then join, being careful not to twist, and p 3 rounds.

As you change colors, leave about a 6 inch tail of each color, to weave in later.

Break color A, join color B, k 5 rounds.
Break color B, join color C, p 1 round.
K 4 rounds.

Fair isle round-
*k 3 color C, k 1 color A* rep to end of round.
Join color A by just leaving a 6 inch tail and begin knitting with the new color Make sure that you carry color A  very loosely across back of work.

Break color A, k 5 rounds with color C.

Break color C, join color A, p 1 round.
K 4 rounds.

Break color A, join color color D, p 1 round.
K 4 rounds.

Second fair isle round-

*K 3 color D, k 1 color B.* rep to end of round.
Join the new color as you did in the first fair isle round.
Break color B.

K 5 rounds with color D.

Break color D, Join color B, p 1 round.
K 4 rounds.

Break color B, join color C, p 3 rounds.

Break color C, join color A, k 1 round.

Mark the 20th, 40th, 60th, and 80th stitch with a small safety pin or paper clip. Make the 80th stitch marker different, to mark the beginning of the round. Remove the other beginning of the round marker.

Begin decreasing-
*k to within 1 stitch of marked stitch, dbl dec* rep 3 more times.
K 1 round.

Repeat the last 2 rounds until you have 32 stitches left.
Change to doublepoint needles, and begin decreasing every round until 8 stitches are left.
Break yarn, and using a darning needle, gather stitches and weave in ends.
