Moonlight Slippersock
Size - Women's shoe sizes 5 to 11.

Materials- Worsted weight yarn, approx. 200 yds. for
main color, about 20 yards of contrast color.
Doublepoint needles size 5, or size needed to get the
gauge.

Gauge- in circular stockinet stitch,  22 stitches equal 4
inches.

Abbreviations-
k - knit
p - purl
st - stitch
ins - inches
ssk - slip one st as if to k, slip one st as if to p,  slip the
tip of the left needle into the fronts of these sts
and k them.
sl - slip a st from the left  to the right needle without
knitting it.
Tog - together
MC- main color
CC- contrast color

Beginning at the top edge of the sock, cast on 44 stitches, 14 on 2 of the needles, and 16 on one needle. Join the work into a round, being careful not to twist.

Work 12 rounds of 2 x 2 rib as follows -

Round 1- k2, p2 to end of round.
Repeat this round 11 times.

K 2 rounds.

Begin star pattern as follows -
Round 1; *k 3 MC, k 1 CC* repeat to end of round.
Rounds 2 thru 4; k.
Round 5- k 1 MC, k 1 CC, *k 3 MC, k 1 CC* repeat to within 1 st of end of          round, k 1 MC.
Rounds 6 thru 8- k.
Round 9- as round 1.


K 2 rounds.

Divide for heel as follows ;
k 22 stitches onto one needle for the heel.  (14 stitches from the first needle, and 8 stitches from the second needle). Divide the remaining 22 stitches onto 2 needles to hold for the instep.

Work back and forth on the heel stitches as follows;

Begin moon chart -
Row 1 of chart - sl 1, p 21.
( to help you count rows later, mark the row below this first row with a safety pin, in the middle of the row, on the right side of work)

Continue to work chart , slipping the first stitch of each row.

After working the chart, you should have 19 rows (the first row being the row above the safety pin). You should be ready to work a k row.

Turn heel-
Row 1- sl 1, k 11, ssk, k 1, turn.
Row 2- sl 1, p 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn.
Row 3- sl 1, k 4, ssk, k 1, turn.
Row 4- sl 1, p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn.
Row 5- sl 1, k 6, ssk, k 1, turn.
Row 6- sl 1, p 7, p 2 tog, p 1, turn.
Row 7- sl 1, k 8, ssk, k 1, turn.
Row 8- sl 1, p 9, p 2 tog, p 1, turn.
Row 9- sl 1, k 10, ssk, turn.
Row 10- sl 1, p 10, p 2 tog.
The heel is turned, 12 stitches remain on needle.

Slip all 22 instep stitches on to one needle.

Next row; k across 6 heel sts. Using another needle, k across the next 6 heel sts, and using this same needle, pick up 12 sts along the side of the heel.
Using another needle, k across the 22 instep sts.
Using another needle, pick up 12 sts along the other side of the heel, and using this same needle, k across  the 6 heel sts.
The middle of the heel is now the beginning of the round. You should have 18 sts on the first needle, 22 on the second needle, and 18 on the 3rd needle. K 1 round.

Shape gusset-
Round 1-
1st needle; k to within 3 sts of end of needle, k 2 tog, k 1.
2nd needle; k.
3rd needle; k 1, ssk, k to end of needle.
Round 2- k.

Continue to work the last 2 rounds until there are 11 sts on the 1st and 3rd needle, and 22 sts on the 2nd needle. 44 sts.

K every round on these sts until foot of sock measures  1 3/4 ins. less than desired length.

Shape toe;
Round 1-
   1st needle; k to within 3 sts of end of needle, k 2 tog, k 1.

    2nd needle; k 1, ssk, k to within 3 sts of end of needle, k 2 tog, k 1.
   
    3rd needle; k 1, ssk, k to the end of needle.

Round 2- k.

Continue to work these last 2 rounds until there are 20 sts left ( 5 on 1st needle, 10 on 2nd needle, and 5 on 3rd needle.)
Now work  the decrease round (round 1) on every round until 8 sts are left. Break yarn leaving a 6 inch length, and using a darning needle, gather stitches, and weave in end.

To find the finished length your slipper should be to fit well, have wearer stand on a sheet of paper, make 2 marks as shown, then measure between the 2 marks. Add 1/4 inch to that measurement, and that will be your finished length.
